When the old gothic tale meets modern time, one enters in a dark territory where ambiguity and madness are in every corner.

The little stranger in here is quite easy to read but the sheer talent of Sarah Waters and her ability to keep the darkness everywhere.

The fall of the aristocratic family follow the path of the Ushers, the little maid seems out of an horror movie and the poor doctor Faraday slowly falls from Jekyll to Hyde.

But despite everything doubts remain, maybe this is a simple story of madness and bad luck and the little plastee acorn never bore the strangest fruit.
